Jeep Grand Cherokee

The trims are named the same on both sides of the ocean and mean different things. In Europe, Laredo is the entry level — but entry level there includes four-wheel drive, dual-zone climate control and multimedia. In America, Laredo is genuinely basic and four-wheel drive is an option. A buyer who reads Laredo and expects 4x4 because that is what it means here has to check the individual car.

The engine is the other large difference. The European Grand Cherokee sold mainly as a diesel — the 3.0 CRD, 190 or 250 hp. In our stock the diesel is a couple of dozen cars out of several thousand. Almost everything American is the 3.6 Pentastar petrol.

Above it sit the engines that make these cars hard to find here: the 5.7 HEMI V8, the 6.4 SRT and the 6.2 supercharged Trackhawk. Stellantis stopped importing the large naturally aspirated V8s into Europe over the emissions standards — a new HEMI Jeep is not sold by a dealer on this continent any more. Import is the only route to one, which is both a reason to want it and a reason to check the emissions tax and the registration category before buying.

The ladder above Laredo, for what the names are worth: Limited is the mass-market choice, Overland the luxury level that was especially popular in Europe with Quadra-Lift air suspension and ventilated seats, Summit the flagship with Harman Kardon and acoustic glass. Trailhawk from 2017 is the real off-roader, with Quadra-Drive II and an electronic rear differential lock.

S and S-Limited are worth naming separately because they mislead. They are an SRT-flavoured visual package — bumpers, badges, wheels — on the standard engines. The car looks like the fast one and is not it.
