Mazda CX-30

One plant, two philosophies. Both American and European CX-30s are assembled in Mexico, so the origin does not tell the cars apart — the configuration does.

America backs power. The 2.5 SkyActiv-G with 186 to 191 hp is the base and the volume engine, and the 2.5 Dynamic Pressure Turbo with 227 to 250 hp is the top. The turbo is not offered in Europe at all — if you want a CX-30 that accelerates like a hot hatch, the American market is the only one.

Europe backs technology. The base is the 2.0 SkyActiv-G with 122 or 150 hp, a mild hybrid. Above it sits the SkyActiv-X — an engine with a supercharger and compression ignition, a petrol unit working on a diesel principle. It was never sold in America. It is economical, but significantly more complex to maintain than the American naturally aspirated engines.

There is also an inverted number that misleads. After 2024 Europe gets the 2.5 e-SkyActiv G, but artificially limited to 140 hp on emissions grounds — the same capacity that in America gives 191. One displacement, fifty horsepower apart, purely because of regulation.

The manual gearbox is European. In Europe the CX-30 is widely bought with a six-speed manual; in America the model is automatic only. The drivetrain in both markets can be front or all-wheel drive, so that is checked on the individual car.
